Sliding

Given an equal choice between jumping and sliding, I'll normally choose to jump. The problem with sliding under something is that the camera follows you and it's hard to see what's coming, making it easy to get caught in something unexpected.

There are a couple of ways to deal with it. First you can make sure to get a good look at the road ahead before swiping. Knowing exactly what's coming will help you to avoid problems. Even a quick glance can really help.

The other thing you can do is start your slide earlier. If you can time it so that you pop up right after the obstacle, you'll have more time to deal with whatever is coming. Just make sure not to slide too early.

Even though I think jumping is usually safer, if there are coins underneath I'll slide. The trick is to know when things are dangerous enough that you should skip the coins and just jump.

Swipe Before Resuming

In Temple Run if you pause in a bad place, like just before a corner, it can mean the end of the game once it resumes. Fortunately it doesn't have to be like that.

First, pick your pause spots carefully. Pause in places where you can see some clear road up ahead. It makes resuming much less stressful.

But if you do pause in a bad place, you can always do a swipe before the game resumes. While the countdown is running you can enter a swipe, and the action will happen the moment it resumes. So if you paused right in front of a hole, do an upswipe during the countdown. You'll jump immediately once the countdown is done.

Jump Turning

You can turn while in the middle of a jump. Try it out: as you approach a corner, jump and then swipe to the side. You'll turn in mid-air and land around the corner. A quick mid-air swipe can save your game!

Resurrection (Angel Wings)

Within the Temple Run store under Utilities, you can buy the angel wings for 500 coins each. To use them in a game, just double-tap the screen any time you want. The wings will appear on your back and while they last, any time you die you'll automatically continue at the same place and with all your coins etc.

Once the effect wears off, it takes some time for the wings to be available again. Of course to use the wings multiple times in the same game, you'll need to have purchased more than one beforehand. When they become available you'll hear a little ding, and a wings icon will appear up at the top right of the screen. In fact if you have any wings purchased, the wing icon will be there when you start the game; you can use them immediately.

Nobody likes double-tapping and getting nothing, so try to have some in stock every time you run. Eventually you'll start making bulk purchases of dozens or more at a time so you don't have to worry about it. If the game goes long enough you can burn through quite a few. BTW, if you're buying a lot at one time you can tap quickly and get through the purchase pretty fast.

The worst thing about angel wings? Getting distracted while activating them and killing yourself, burning 500 coins for nothing. The best thing? Flying through the air towards certain death and slipping in a quick double-tap before you die. Ninja move.

The Power of the Magnet

Most of my best scores in Temple Run have come from games where I got the magnet, especially multiple times. Not only do you get every coin in your path (and maybe a few extra near corners), but it takes no thought at all so you can just concentrate on staying alive.

And once you're into double territory (red coins) or triple (blue coins), the points come in fast. If I'm fairly deep in the game and get the magnet, I'll use the angel wings. Of course the magnet goes away if you die and get resurrected, but at least you'll have a pocket full of coins.

Slow Yourself Down

When Temple Run starts moving faster as you rack up the meters, it’s easy to make a mistake. Remember that you can always slow yourself down a couple of different ways.

The most obvious method is to let yourself trip over one of the small branches in the path. This will slow you down without killing you. Try to do it towards the thinner side of the branch.

The second way is to slam yourself into the wall. Either tilt into the wall, or swipe to the side into it. Any way you do it, the monkeys will be on you again and you’ll have to avoid any mistakes until they go away. But it will definitely slow you down, and that can be really helpful. Of course the wall method requires a wall along the path, which isn't always available.

I found it can be hard to remember to do it the heat of the moment. Try to keep it in mind. Also, don't do it right before you have to jump something or you may not make it across at the slower speed. Finally, remember that when you've slowed down you'll need to slow yourself down as well. You'll need to change your timing (immediately) to adjust to the new speed.

The Double Jump

Sometimes after jumping you need to jump again the moment you land. There's an easy way to do this: when you're in the air, swipe upwards again. You'll bounce right back up when you hit the ground.
